B i o g r a p h y

     Dr. Matt Walley is a trombonist with The Orchestra Now, a part of Bard College, NY. He has recently graduated from Rutgers University with a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Trombone Performance where he served under the tutelage of Weston Sprott, Second Trombone of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. While studying trombone, he also studied Instrumental Conducting with Darryl Bott, Deputy Director of the School of Music at RU. He holds a Master of Music Degree from the University of Georgia and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. 

    During his tenure at Rutgers University Dr. Walley performed as a featured soloist with the Brevard Symphonic Winds, Brevard Sinfonia, Pace (FL) High School Wind Ensemble and numerous times with the Atlantic Brass Band. He served as Solo Trombone of the Atlantic Brass Band and Principal trombone of both the Rutgers Symphony Orchestra and Rutgers Wind Ensemble. Dr. Walley has taught as a substitute faculty member at the Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program. Dr. Walley has had three performances with the New York String Orchestra in Carnegie Hall and has also performed with the Edison Symphony Orchestra, Adelphi Orchestra, Garden State Philharmonic, Mid-Atlantic Opera, and Light Opera of New Jersey. During this time Dr. Walley has performed at the Brevard Music Institute where he performed as Second Trombone with the Breveard Music Center Orchestra and as a trombonist in the Brevard Sinfonia. 

    Dr. Walley has also performed with the Symphony Orchestras of both the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and University of Georgia as well as their respective Wind Ensembles. In addition to his performance in the Brevard Music Institute, he has performed in the Rekkenze Brass Festival in Lichtenburg, Germany with the Bulldog Brass Quintet, and during the Rome (Italy) Music Festival Orchestra. Dr. Walley has presented numerous solo recitals in Nebraska, Georgia, Mississippi, Florida, and New Jersey. 

    Also Dr. Walley has had additional study with Dr. Scott Anderson (Professor of Trombone at U of Nebraska-Lincoln) and Dr. Joshua Bynum (Assistant Professor of Trombone at U of Georgia). Additionally, Dr. Walley has performed in masterclasses and studied privately with Nitzan Haroz (principal trombone of the Los Angeles Philharmonic), Toby Oft (principal trombone of the Boston Symphony Orchestra), Michael Mulcahy (2nd trombone of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and professor at Northwestern University), Charles Vernon (Bass Trombone of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra).
